How to make a candle: the recipe

Before personalizing your candle with essential oils, you first need to prepare the wax! For this, you will need:

  • 70 g of plant-based wax (soy, rice) or animal (beeswax)

  • 10 cm of wick: you can use a cloth or a wooden wick

  • 30 drops of essential oils

  • You can also add colorants or vegetable oils (max 10 ml) according to your desires!

Take some wax and melt it. Then, dip the wick into this wax: this allows it to soak well, and it can burn slowly when lighting your candle.

Melt all the wax, then add the essential oils, colorants, and vegetable oils. Mix everything together and then pour it into your candle container. Place the wick in the center, making sure to lay it at the bottom of the container.

You have the basic recipe: now let’s look more closely at how to choose your essential oils for a naturally scented candle!

Essential oils for candles: how to choose?

To make the candle as effective and safe as possible, you need a bit of preparation! Between the precautions of a little chemist and preparing a rich scent, it is important to anticipate certain aspects. Let’s see what they are together.

Essential oils and flash point: ensuring your safety

All essential oils are flammable at different temperatures. This is called the flash point: at a certain temperature specific to each essential oil, it can ignite or deform (lose its properties, be degraded). That’s why it’s important to have a good thermometer before you start preparing your essential oil candles!

Since each essential oil has a different flash point, be sure to learn more about the oil you want to use.

For example: Mearome lemon essential oil has a flash point of 53°C. This means it should not be heated above 53°C, so when your candle wax has melted well, you will need to wait until it is below 53°C before adding the drops of lemon essential oil.

If you are using a blend of essential oils, always consider the lowest flash point. This will ensure the quality and safety of your candle.

Don’t worry, however, when burning your candle: the essential oil is so diluted in wax that there is no risk of the essential oil igniting.

Prepare your essential oil blend for a scented candle

The beauty of a scented candle is that it smells good… So, to achieve this, you need to prepare a blend of essential oils that suits your scent preferences!

Don’t be afraid to start: do a little test! Experiment in a small bottle, mixing several essential oils of your choice, to find the scent you like best.
