Choosing the Right PG/VG Ratio

The e-liquid contained in electronic cigarettes is made up of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). These two compositions are represented at a ratio that should be taken into account when making your choice. We will help you make your choice with this article.

The different characteristics of PG and VG

We will discuss the characteristics of PG and VG that make up the e-liquid.

Propylene Glycol

PG allows for the good diffusion of the e-liquid flavor, the throat hit produced by nicotine, as well as the flavors. However, PG does not produce much vapor. If the e-liquid contains a high level of PG, it will have a rather strong taste, but it will hit with little vapor. Liquids with a full PG ratio (100%) produce no vapor and a huge HIT.

Vegetable Glycerin VG

As for VG, it allows for the production of vapor in a quite significant way. However, this composition reduces both the flavors and the HIT produced by nicotine. Additionally, it quickly clogs the coils of clearomizers. E-liquids with a high VG level produce a lot of vapor but lack a strong taste and HIT. The correct choice of the whole should then be made to achieve the desired result.

The choice of ratios

Generally, electronic cigarette users prefer ratios of 80% PG and 20% VG, as well as the 70/30 ratio, which allows for enough vapor and ensures a good return of flavors and HIT. It is also possible to use the 50% PG/50% VG ratio for those who prefer higher vapor. It is not recommended for beginners to have a VG ratio higher than 50%.

  • A PG/VG ratio of 80/20 provides low vapor and a fairly strong throat hit.
  • A PG/VG ratio of 70/30 allows for more vapor and a good throat hit,
  • A PG/VG ratio of 60/40 allows for more vapor and fewer hits,
  • A PG/VG ratio of 50/50 is the perfect balance with well-produced vapor and a fairly smooth hit,
  • A PG/VG ratio of 40/60 allows for big clouds with a very smooth HIT
  • A PG/VG ratio of 30/70 allows for quite good vapor with a relatively light hit,
  • A PG/VG ratio of 20/80 allows you to achieve excellent vapor and a low hit.

And finally, a 100% VG ratio is for fans of very large clouds with a hit that is practically non-existent. And the 100% PG ratio is for those who do not like vapor and prefer a fairly strong hit.

How to choose your e-liquid?

Choosing your e-liquid is not just about selecting the right PG/VG ratio for us, and choosing a bad e-liquid could prevent you from joining the club of electronic cigarette users, of course, leaving behind that of smokers and traditional cigarettes. Therefore, we will try to explain to you the main criteria you have to find your happiness in e-liquid. Let’s start with the simplest and most logical: the flavor. If you are starting out and do not lose your notes too quickly, we recommend choosing a light tobacco or menthol flavor. Once you get used to electronic cigarettes, you can choose flavors based on your own taste. The name of the bottles is generally quite explicit. Free, it’s up to you to vape with a salted caramel or cotton candy flavor. At this crucial moment, you need to pay attention to the propylene glycol (PG) content and, consequently, to the vegetable glycerin (VG) content. The second important point, of course, is the nicotine content contained in the liquid. It is indicated in milligrams per milliliter. The rule is relatively simple:

  • If you smoke less than 10 cigarettes a day: a liquid of 6 mg/ml should be very suitable for you.
  • If you are an average smoker with less than a pack a day, you should switch to e-liquids with 11 mg/ml.
  • If you smoke a lot and smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, you should refer to products containing 16 mg/ml of nicotine.

It is worth noting that new products have appeared on the market. We no longer talk about nicotine, but about nicotine salts. They have the great advantage of being more easily absorbed by the body. Your craving to smoke will then be relieved more quickly. Be careful, products with additives will maintain your addiction and will not allow you to quit tobacco. To complete the theme and calm down, the name of the salt may scare some users, but it does not give the liquid any salty taste at all. Now that the main ingredients are not a secret to you, you still need to choose your electronic cigarette model, and here too, it is anything but a thin matter.
